Median annual household income in the United States in June 2014: $53,891

Population of United States in June 2014: ~320,000,000

Population x median household income: 17,245,120,000,000

US National debt, June 2014: $17,530,000,000,000

Hmmm. That's really close. I'm no politician but I figured this out a while back

I'm afraid I may be missing something. Are you trying to imply some link between the two? Because I just see an amusing coincidence.

It's better to compare debt to wealth, not income. Even so, someone with a mortgage of 1x their annual income is not in trouble, are they?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Financial…

"The financial position of the United States includes assets of at least $269.6 trillion (1576% of GDP ) and debts of $145.8 trillion (852% of GDP) to produce a net worth of at least $123.8 trillion (723% of GDP,) [a] as of Q1 2014."

The assets line is probably a gross understatement, by the way, because it doesn't begin to measure intangibles like (for example) the value of a degree for a recent graduate.

Oh, and your maths is wrong anyway. There is more than one person per household.

Well, the average household has 2.54 people. So the equation should probably read "household income X number of households ". $53,891(320,000,000/2.54)= $6,789,417,322,835

Speaking of chemtrails I've worked with two people now that believe the gov't is putting fluoride into the water to dumb down the free-thinking center of our brains. My mistake was thinking they were joking so I chuckled and they said "no, you don't believe they are?" Apparently this gives everyone who believes in it a master's degree in neurochemistry.

I find this one a lot more interesting. Job creators we call them.

Kinja'd!!!

This is real wealth over time since 1979 (the year before the Silver Haired Prophet was elected. Blue is the average income which has grown less than 10%. Green is worker productivity. Red is top 1% income. Don't worry about that dip. Those were losses 'on paper.' Also keep in mind, that red line is not relative to the blue line, it's just a reflection of their own wealth starting in 1979. They were already rich at that time. I say that because I don't want people thinking that for a few year, the reds were worse off than the blues.

This graphic...

Kinja'd!!!

... is the ratio to CEO pay versus average worker pay. Bear in mind that the CEO is not the only guy at the top that gets paid like this. Yes, indeed. Your CEO is worth 400 times what you are as a human being. You should be so lucky you have a job to feed your family you filthy slog.

Yes, it's the standard result that increasing globalisation will increase the wealth of the very richest on the planet and all the billions of poor people, at the relative expense of the already wealthy but not super-rich. Bear in mind that globally, almost everyone in the US is a 1%er.

What you're complaining about is the best way - only way - we've found to bring the abjectly poor majority of this planet up out of poverty. You must really hate poor people or something...

Remember macroeconomics...demand for US debt is high because it's stable and will get paid back. Volatility has a serious dampening effect on economic performance...it's why China is growing faster than us but still needs to keep reserves of dollars as an economic hedge.

So long as the US economy is growing, we could run a deficit every year and still never run out of money. Macro is weird.

multiplying by the "average" really only works well if the distribution is Normal. You quoted the median, which is a great start, but that distribution is so spectacularly skewed

Problem is that's average household income, and the US averages 2.58 people per household.

Therefore, to get an accurate number vs. population:

320,000,000 / 2.58 = 124,031,008.

124,031,008 * 53,891 = $6,684,155,039,000.

So no, it doesn't really sync up.
